What if we today had a Year of Jubilee Empty What if we today had a Year of Jubilee

Some of the practical effects of the Year of Jubilee (chapter 25) would have been:

  1. Less exploitation of the poor.
  2. No sharp class divisions--prevented the accumulation of wealth in the hands of a few
  3. No real estate monopolies--there was little incentive to lease land, since the land would ultimately go back to the owner in the Year of Jubilee, and since the price of the leased land was directly tied to the value of the crops
  4. Materialism would have been hindered.
  5. Family unity and community would have been aided
  6. The poor were provided for--and occasionally given a fresh start
  7. The Israelites were reminded that even the land on which they lived was a gift from God
  8. Letting the land lie fallow for 2 years (the sabbath year plus the year of Jubilee) would have reminded them to trust in God to provide for them.

Tucked inside Leviticus 24-25 was this situation:
"Then the Lord said to Moses, 'Take the blasphemer outside the camp...
The entire assembly must stone him to death.'' (Leviticus 24:13,14,16)

"If one of your countrymen becomes poor and sells some of his property,
his nearest relative is to come and redeem what his countryman has sold." (Leviticus 25:25)

Lord Jesus, I confess that there have been many times when I have blasphemed your name.
There have been times when I have used it thoughtlessly,
or even used it in ways that go against everything for which you stand.
In fact, I misuse your name every time that I sin, for as a Christian I bear your name.
As a result, my soul is a slave to sin and to the results of sin.

But you have redeemed me.
You have bought me back through your suffering and death
and you have restored to me the sure hope of eternal life.

For being my redeemer, I praise you. Amen.
